Overview
If you've ever run an email drip campaign or sent mass personalized messages, you're probably familiar with mail merge. You can use DocSend Mail Merge links in your message templates on any of your marketing automation tools. Mail Merge links will track engagement for anyone who clicks on it. The best part? You'll know who your visitors are without prompting for their email since that part is configured on your marketing automation tool through the merge tag.

Mail Merge Services
A marketing automation tool is required to create a successful mail merge link. DocSend comes prebuilt with different marketing automation services such as the ones listed below. You're also welcome to use services that aren't listed; for more information, scroll down to Create a Mail Merge Link using Other.

Create a Mail Merge Link
To create a Mail Merge Link, follow the steps listed below.
Important: When Track Forwarding is enabled, anyone not listed as a recipient on your marketing automation tool will be required to input their email address before gaining access to your shared content.
- On the document page, click on the down arrow next to the Create Link button and select Mail Merge Link.
- Fill in the required fields: Campaign name and email service. Selecting your email service from the options listed will automatically populate your merge tag.
- Configure any of the optional settings listed: Track forwarding, Allow Downloading, Expiration Date, and/or Passcode.
- Click on Create Link when complete.
- Copy the link and hyperlink it to text in the body of your campaign/sequence/template on your marketing automation tool.
Create a Mail Merge Link using Other
For a service that's not listed, select Other and input the recipient merge tag associated with your service of choice. Then, follow the steps listed above.
Important: Your merge tag is specific to your marketing automation tool. We recommend visiting your marketing automation tool’s help center for more information on your specific merge tag.
Mail Merge Visit Tracking
Mail merge links are assigned a merge icon and visits are tracked the same way DocSend links are tracked. Please note, a standard DocSend link that has an account icon will not behave like a mail merge link.
Marketing Automation Tool Experience
Generally speaking, most marketing automation services behave similarly when it comes to setting up campaigns, sequences, or templates. The biggest difference is the tags each of those tools use. For example, outreach.io uses the merge tag, {{email}}, to dynamically track the recipients' email while other tools may use a different tag.
All you have to do with DocSend is create your mail merge link with the correct merge tag configured, paste it into your content, and save.
Things to Consider
- Mail Merge is not available for Spaces.
- When Track Forwarding is enabled, Viewer Email Validation is available for mail merge links.
- Mail Merge does not currently support Advanced link settings like Access Control, Agreements, or Watermarking.
